Prepare your body with strengthening exercises to help prevent straining or spraining the muscles and ligaments. Running puts a particular strain on the ankles, and many trail running injuries occur from an over-inversion of the foot -often leading to a sprain that could keep you inactive for weeks. The following exercises will help to prevent excess damage to this delicate area. Plantar flexion is a good ankle strengthening action, involving pointing the toes down before lifting them up to the usual 90 degree angle. The controlled inversion and eversion of the toes (pointing them inwards and outward respectively) will also aid in strengthening key ankle muscles.
